چکیده

The High Level Architecture (HLA) [1] is a reusable software architecture for the development and execution of distributed simulation applications. It is fostered by the Defense Modelling and Simulation Office (DMSO) [2] of the US Department of Defense (DoD) since 1996. The HLA has become a new standard for distributed simulation in the Object Management Group (OMG) in November 1998 and the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) as IEEE-1516 in September 2000[]. In this paper, we review the basic concepts of distributed interactive simulation and its evolving history from SIMNET to HLA. Then we illustrate how the HLA supports the requirements of the collaborative virtual environment (CVE) via its service groups, using our virtual shopping mall application as an example.

Collaborative Virtual Environment Standards: A Performance Evaluation

Collaborative Virtual Environments are virtual reality spaces that enable participants to collaborate and share objects as if physically present in the same place. These collaboration spaces require strict performance characteristics. Today there are many systems developed specifically for collaboration, including DIVE, CALVIN, and COVEN. At the same time, some relatively new standards that add...

DeskTOP, a System based on Virtual Spaces to Support and to Promote Collaborative Learning

provides a coordination mechanism to help to maintain an interaction order among the participants and to make it more efficient. The collaborative virtual environments have become a good alternative to construct collaborative learning systems. In this paper we present DeskTOP, a collaborative virtual environment implemented on the Web to support and to promote collaborative learning in universi...

Supporting Problem based Learning by a Collaborative Virtual Environment: A Cooperative Hypermedia Approach

Problem based learning promotes engagement in meaningful learning and cooperation among students. When applying PBL in distributed groups distance has to be bridged by means of technology. Collaborative virtual environments (CVE) can help to overcome two crucial problems of PBL, if used in a distributed learning situation: Firstly, learners have problems to understand, interact with, and tailor...

Common Frame of reference in collaborative virtual environments and their impact on presence

Virtual collaborative environment are 3D shared spaces in which people can work together. To collaborate through these systems, users must have a shared comprehension of the environment. The objective of this experimental study was to determine if visual stable landmarks improve the construction of a common representation of the virtual environment and thus facilitate collaboration. This seems ...
